Silver Stars put on a show at the Palace

After almost six weeks of rehearsing, the Silver Stars theatre company is ready for the opening night curtain.

The community performing group consists of actors ages 50 and up, and they put on a show twice a year at The Palace.

“This year, we decided to do a Broadway revue-style theme,” said Pat Bryan, a volunteer with the group. “We had a brainstorming session and picked some of our favorite songs from classic shows, and added some skits.”

After an impressive number of hopeful actors showed up at the auditions, the director and volunteers at Silver Stars didn’t want to turn anyone away, even if it meant teaching them how to tap dance from square one.

“We found something for everyone to do,” Bryan said. “If they wanted to contribute to the show, we found a way for them to do so.”

The result is “A Tribute to Music,” opening Tuesday, Nov. 16 and playing again on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Silver Stars will be performing two shows on Wednesday: one at 10 a.m. and one at 7 p.m.

“We added the morning show for our senior friends in the audience,” Bryan said. “Many seniors go to bed early or they don’t like to drive at night. This was a good alterative for them.”

Some of the featured songs will be “Do You Love Me,” from Fiddler on the Roof; “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” and “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, and the title song from Hello, Dolly. There will be group numbers, solo songs and even a dance number or two. The grand finale, a hula number from “South Pacific,” is supposed to bring down the house.

“It’s wholesome entertainment that people can bring their children and grandchildren to come and see without worry,” Bryan said.

A Tribute to Music opens Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 80 Hanover St.. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, there will be a 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. show. Tickets are $9. To reserve tickets, call The Palace Box Office at 668-5588.
