New Thalian Players hold auditions for Underpants

The New Thalian Players will hold open auditions for the Steve Martin farce The Underpants on Feb. 20 and 21. Both male and female community actors are welcome to audition.

Local actor William Hartery, who has starred in literally hundreds of local plays and musicals as well as a national tour of Cats, will direct the comedy. He collected a Best Actor trophy at last year’s New Hampshire Theatre Awards for his work in New Thalian Players’ production of Oliver. He recently completed an artist-in-residence program in two Manchester middle schools, working with at-risk kids in a drama program. Hartery made his directorial debut last year with 6 Rms Rvr View at Stage One Productions.

The Underpants takes place in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1910. A German couple, Theo and Louise, are attending the king’s parade when Louise stands on a bench on her tiptoes to get a better look. Lovely Louise’s frilly underpants fall down to her ankles. Her grouch of a husband — a frumpy government employee — is mortified, while the rest of the men in this sleepy town are mesmerized by the so-called “pantaloon incident.” Scandal, gossip and Steve Martin-style wackiness ensue.

The New Thalian Players seem to be making a habit of performing rarely seen farces: last November, the group put on the political comedy The Senator Wore Pantyhose, which received a handful of nominations at this year’s New Hampshire Theatre Awards.

The troupe was founded in 1983 as part of Notre Dame College. Since the college shut down, the New Thalian Players have performed all over the greater Manchester area, including the Bedford Towne Hall and the Annichiarro Theatre in Concord. The Underpants will be performed May 6, 7 and 8 at the Bedford Towne Hall.

For Underpants, the casting directors are in search of one actress in her 20s, one actress ranging in age from 40 to 50, and four men ranging in age from 30 to 60. The auditions will be held on Sunday, Feb. 20 and Monday, Feb. 21, 6-8 p.m. at the New Thalian Players’ new offices, located at 300 Bedford Street, building B. Actors should be prepared to read from the script. For more information, call 622-9759 or visit www.newthalianplayers.org.
