Shelby Lynne, Tears Lies And Alibis

Nothing strenuous or new here in this make-nice follow-up to Just A Little Lovin’, Lynne’s 2008 Dusty Springfield tribute LP, over which fans found themselves divided, mostly over whether or not Springfield is out of Lynne’s weight class. That’s not really so, and at the very least Lynne didn’t go for the easy layup with some disgusting Hollywood-ized cover of “Son of a Preacher Man” (Farmer’s Daughter were the ones who capitalized on the Pulp Fiction-generated frenzy over that song in 1995). Lynne can’t help it if her soothing, unhurried contralto voice is similar to Springfield’s (actually on this album it’s closer to Toni Tennille’s, and some of the tunes have a halcyon though troubled similarity to “Muskrat Love”), and her career — one cog of which is acting, as in her turn as Johnny Cash’s mother in Walk the Line – is pretty much unstoppable at this point. Unplugged solo strumming across the board, save for the KT Tunstall-minded opener “Rains Came.” B+
