Marilyn Manson, Eat Me, Drink Me

Sigh, this one isnít Mechanical Animals either; itís a different beast altogether. Manson and multi-instrumentalist Tim Skold must have hit the creepy lover bottle pretty hard on Eat Me, Drink Me. The shredding static and computron bloppery of prior Manson releases has been pulled waaaay back to make room for what may be the quintessence of goth rock tin and sludge guitars and our old friend ó spooky organ melodies. Skoldís relentless hooks and frenetic solos cradle Mansonís new-found lovey dovey-ness admirably. And the love stuff? Yeah, itís wrapped in this ho-hum vampire theme ó which from anybody but Marilyn Manson would be called a Manson rip off ó but it works. Mansonís emotional honesty, however icksome, is charming even when his metaphors seem goofily forced into the spooky side. Perusing the liner notes doesnít bode well if you canít surpress a mocking chuckle at lyrics that, read dry, are frightful in their blunt gothness. Despite my fishnet and eyeliner high school days Iíve never been one to truck with the horrid poetry associated with the goth sub-culture but Manson helps me over that hump here. Eat Me, Drink Me falters near the 35-minute mark (ďAre You the RabbitĒ and ďMutliation is the Most Sincere Form of FlatteryĒ just donít mesh with their sibling songs) but wraps up strong as one of Mansonís most intriguing albums to date.
