Spring arts guide
A pretty comprehensive list by date of plays, gallery exhibits, movies, lectures and more in this glamour-filled season
Assembled by Heidi Masek • hmasek@hippopress.com

It’s time again for open studios and gallery events like Art Walk Nashua, Open Doors Manchester and Art Concord. April and May are also a great time to catch theatrical performances, and there’s some wild stuff this year. Urinetown takes the audience on a musical journey to a city where you have to pay to pee. An angry East German transsexual fronts a rock band in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. If you crave the new, see staged readings of new contemporary plays chosen from the Yellow Taxi play contest. Spring is also the time that the state’s opera and classical performers wrap up their seasons with big shows. And just about everyone has a gala fundraiser to dress up for. Short on cash? There are free concerts and art events to take advantage of. So read on, and don’t even think of calling us to complain of boredom.

People: New Hampshire: the movie
By John “jaQ” Andrews jandrews@hippopress.com

Between them, Gregg Kavet and Andy Robin worked on 12 Seinfeld episodes. Now they are opening a new film across New England on March 30 that they wrote and directed. Called Live Free or Die, it chronicles the adventures of John “Rugged” Rudgate, a petty criminal who fancies himself a real tough guy living in small-town New Hampshire. It will play locally at the Regal Hoyts Cinema 9, 1279 South Willow St., Manchester, and has been making the rounds at film festivals, winning two awards so far.

Theater: Reluctant star
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com

Former WMUR sportscaster Charlie Sherman, current WGIR radio host, will be starring as Tevye in the Amherst PTA performance of Fiddler on the Roof in April.

Yes, that Charlie Sherman.

Food: New 'nuches
By Susan Reilly news@hippopress.com

On March 6, New Cheese Grill opened quietly in the former Stage Door Café space.

New Cheese Grill is the fourth restaurant from Todd Tousley. He owns three Penuche’s — Keene, Nashua and Concord — and this is his first foray into dining.

Longshots: Sox spring back into action on Monday
by Dave Long

It was an eventful winter for the Red Sox, who spent like drunken sailors on leave from the USS Steinbrenner. It let them acquire a bevy of set-up relievers, pricey outfielder J. D. Drew, Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka and their fourth shortstop since Nomar Garciaparra was shipped to Chicago for the 2004 World Championship.

Techie: Security can be free
By John “jaQ” Andrews  jandrews@hippopress.com

Every now and then I bust on anti-virus software.

It’s not that I don’t think it works, but it’s one of those cutting off your nose to spite your face things: you might be a little safer, but at the expense of decreased computer performance and monthly fees. It’s one thing if you’re responsible for a thousand users on a corporate network and want to make sure nothing potentially bad gets through; it’s quite another if your home computer is frustrating you even though you sprang for the faster processor and extra RAM.
