How to be the producers
For some kids, the drama is behind the curtain
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com
Make art. Entertain. Make money.
Keith Weirich gave those directives this summer to the Young Company, the Peacock Players’ teen summer troupe. Adult staff produced the troupe’s first two shows as usual, but the final show is all on the teens this year. Young Company members chose the play, produced, directed, designed and made costumes and sets, marketed, and had to stick to a budget and try to turn a profit. It’s called “Project X,” and Weirich got the concept from IFC’s Project Greenlight.

People: The mash-up movie maker
By Brian Early bearly@hippopress.com
As a freelance journalist, Geoffrey James of Hollis has written for publications (Wired, Men’s Health and the New York Times) and also written seven books, including The Tao of Programming. In the last couple of years, he’s turned his attention to movie-making and produced a full-length animated Star Trek film, Borg War, which will premiere Friday at the Star Trek Convention at the Las Vegas Hilton. It’s not your ordinary animated film. It was created by reprogramming and manipulating images from two Star Trek-themed computer games, Starfleet Command 3 and Elite Force 2. James, 53, wrote, directed and edited the film in his spare time. The movie is available for download at www.borgwar.com. So far, it has been downloaded 150,000 times, according to James.

Longshots: Will this three make it big in Boston
by Dave Long
OK — I’ve had a week to think about it and I’m warming to the blockbuster deal that made Kevin Garnett a Celtic. It’s not perfect and somebody, preferably Danny himself, please, please, please tell me they’re not done yet. But as a certified basketball guy, who enjoys the Celtics in meaningful playoff games infinitely more than the Red Sox, I’d be asking for a seat on Dr. Melfi’s couch if I looked past the bright side.
