Farm in the city
How to be an urban gardener
By Brian Early bearly@hippopress.com

It’s fair to say that the economic outlook for many isn’t rosy.

So far, New Hampshire has fared better than its fellow states, though local and state governments face challenging budgetary issues. But the state is not immune to higher oil prices that have impacted the cost of most every industry and every product, including food at the local grocery store. All the items have been transported there by trucks, and most of the cycle of food has some aspect of fuel involved, helping to push up consumer prices on food. As it is, the New Hampshire Center for a Food Secure Future at UNH estimates that 90 percent of New Hampshire’s food is imported into the state — and a quick look at the stickers on those bananas and tomatoes in the supermarket will tell you some of those foods travel great distances. After all, we need our tomatoes in the middle of winter.

The shelter is unique in that it offers not only furnished apartments but also full-time daycare to help the mothers.

Food: Celebrating with Greek eats
By Linda A. Odum food@hippopress.com

At first glance, Liamos Market in Nashua looks just like any other corner convenience mart. But when you notice the delicious smells and see the imported Greek products lining the shelves, it becomes evident that this is a specialty store, and in this case, the specialty is lamb.

Longshots: Show me the way to the All-Star Game
by Dave Long

During one of my junior years in college I had a chance to see a band called Frampton’s Camel. When a friend asked if I wanted to go I said, “I never heard of him.” So why would I spend what little money I had to see a guy I never heard of? Well the answer came that summer when the mega album Frampton Comes Alive hit the airwaves and record stores with the fastest-selling record of all time. .
