And So, by Joel Brouwer, Four Way Books, 2009, 74 pages
By Dan Szczesny dszczesny@hippopress.com
Alabama-based Joel Brouwer’s third book of poems is a crazy mish-mash of popular culture, classical reference and aching, pained protagonists. Don’t look for any real hinge on which this volume opens up. Instead just go for the ride. Brouwer even throws in a little point -of-view switch-up to keep readers on their toes. My favorite is “In the Crazy Mountain” where a newlywed couple pulls over to a truck stop in the middle of a blizzard where the “Space Invaders machine bleats like a lost calf.” B
