It’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is nearly upon us.

Before you freak out, keep in mind that many local art galleries are getting a jump start on the madness that is holiday shopping.

The Beliveau Fine Art Gallery at the Franco American Center (52 Concord Street, 669-4045) kicks off its “Spirit of the Holidays” annual exhibit with a special reception on Friday, October 29. The show features works by 14 area artists, and all of the works are for sale. Pieces for your consideration include hand-made jewelry, greeting cards and pottery. Of course, you can also purchase a framed and matted original work by local favorites such as painters Anne Trainor Domingue and Nita Leger Casey, or photographs by Lynn Findlay and Althea Haropulos.

FAC Executive Director Yvonne Cyr Bresnahan says that this is one of the center’s  most popular exhibits, so shoppers are urged to come in early for the best selection of pieces. Be advised that you may not be able to walk out with your artwork the day of the purchase.

“What we have found over the years is that so many pieces are bought early in the season, the walls are bare by mid December, so we ask that buyers wait just a little bit so we can enjoy the painting on our walls for a little while,” Bresnahan said.

All pieces that are purchased as gifts for the holidays can be picked up at the FAC after December 19, and festive holiday wrapping services are available. Be sure to browse the gift shop too, where you can find French- themed books, CDs, jewelry and accessories.

Bresnahan is also looking forward to a special international reception for the exhibit, happening November 12. Earlier this month, Bresnahan was one of the local delegates who accompanied Mayor Baines to Quebec City on a trade/cultural mission. The reception will honor other Manchester delegates who traveled north of the border, as well as the Consuls of Canada and Quebec City. Bresnahan also plans to hold the Christmas tree decorating ceremony the same night.

For more information on the Spirit of the Holidays exhibit, or any of the featured artists, call the Franco-American Center at 669-4045. The reception is scheduled for Friday, October 29, 5-7 p.m.  Refreshments will be served. The International reception will be held Friday, November 12, 4-7 p.m. Dinner tickets are available.
