Publisher's Note: NH first yet again
By Jody Reese
Not to jinx us, but it appears that New Hampshire is leading the nation out of recession. Home prices are on the rise and unemployment is leveling off and even declining. Business is picking up.
New Hampshire has many advantages over other states, but I think the single most important one in terms of this recession is our small business base. Small business owners are more likely to invest sooner than larger corporations in new staff and equipment.
An example of that is the growth in credit unions in the state. According to our paper last week, credit unions posted almost an 11-percent gain in assets for 2009. Along with that, small business and personal loans increased.
New Hampshire is very fortunate to have a competitive banking industry, from the big national guys to regional banks to the one-branch credit union.
