Hippo’s Best of 2010
By Jody Reese
Our annual Best of 2010 starts here this week. And it’s a huge list of more than 300 of your favorites. I really love this Best Of because it’s all about local business and people. It’s what makes southern New Hampshire an interesting place to live.
I’d like to thank all the people who voted this year — 50 percent more than last year. I know it’s a huge ballot and takes about 45 minutes to complete, so thank you for taking the time. Many people who voted also joined our new Hippo Fan Club (see www.hippopress.com/fanclub to find out more about the club).
The Best of 2010 is a great way for readers to tell us what they find special about the place where they live. It’s Hippo’s user-generated content. Since we don’t include chains (they aren’t specific to southern New Hampshire), we get a great sense for what people value about this area specifically from its teachers, business owners or favorite markets. People do worry that America and southern New Hampshire are becoming blander because of all the chains and franchises, but I see a different story in our Best Of.
Hippo’s Best of 2010 refelcts the growing diversity in this area. As much as I see many chains out there, I also see more and more small businesses opening. People who are converting their hobby to their business. That’s exciting.
No one is going to save us from the recession but us. When you can, please support your local businesses.
