Art builds community ...
Least-wise that’s the idea in Goffstown By Hannah Onoroski news@hippopress.com
Traveling through local towns you might have noticed “Main Street Community” signs, usually denoting a center of cultural and business activity.
Like Nashua’s Main Street, Manchester’s Elm Street and others, Goffstown has joined the Main Street community. Taking community-building a step further, however, the town has also instituted an Art Team, the first in the area. Participating artists work together to plan and create distinctive works of art, all centered on building a thriving art community in Goffstown.
The Art Team is made up of Goffstown artists, and each brings an inimitable style to the community.
“Each artist brings unique talents and perspectives to the group,” said Kate DalPra, co-chair of the Art Team and owner of Iris Custom Framing. “Many would never have met if it weren’t for the Main Street community.”
Artists work together on projects that incorporate the community. This spring, the Art Team is working on the “Home Tweet Home” fundraiser. Each member of the Art Team is charged with creating or decorating a birdhouse, which will then be auctioned off at Goffstown’s Old Home Day in June. Each artist will be decorating in his own specialized media and style, so expect to see birdhouse designs ranging from oil painting, ceramics, decoupage and fabric, among others.
“Home Tweet Home” is only one of many projects created by the Art Team, which is also responsible for the Concerts on the Common that take place each summer, as well as a co-operative gallery at DalPra’s Iris Custom Framing, showcasing professional artists from the area.
Each year the Art Team adds more members, more projects, and more art to the town of Goffstown. Keep an eye open for upcoming projects and exhibits. For more info on the town’s Main Street Community, check out www.goffstownmainst.org.
